Investment precision casting, also known as lost wax precision casting, uses fusible materials (such as wax or plastic) with the title of Cronci (for short, investment or model).

1. Investment manufacturing

The first process of investment casting production is to manufacture investment molds, which are used to form the cavity in the refractory shell

Therefore, it is necessary to obtain castings with high dimensional accuracy and surface finish. In addition, the performance of the investment mold itself should be as easy as possible to make subsequent processes such as molding shells simple and easy. In order to obtain the investment mold with the above-mentioned high-quality requirements, in addition to a good molding (mold for pressing the investment mold), a suitable molding material (abbreviated as mold material) and a reasonable molding process must also be selected.

1. Mold material

The performance of the molding material should not only ensure that the investment mold with accurate size, high surface finish, high strength, and light weight can be easily made, but it should also create conditions for the manufacture of the shell and the acquisition of good castings. The mold material is generally formulated with wax, natural resin and plastic (synthetic resin). All the mold materials prepared with wax materials are called wax-based mold materials, and their melting point is lower, which is 60~700C; all the mold materials prepared mainly with natural resin are called resin-based mold materials, and the melting point is slightly higher, about 70~ 1200C.

2. Mold material preparation and recycling

1) Preparation of mold materials

The purpose of compounding the mold material is to mix the various raw materials that make up the mold material into a uniform body, and make the state of the mold material meet the requirements of pressing the investment mold. During the preparation, the various raw materials are melted and mixed together by heating, and then under cooling, the mold material is stirred vigorously to make the mold material into a paste state for pressing the mold. Sometimes the mold material is melted into a liquid and poured directly into the mold.

2) Recycling of mold materials.

When using resin-based mold materials, due to the high requirements for the quality of the investment mold, most of the investment molds for the mold material compression castings are prepared with new materials. The mold material recovered after demolding is used to make the investment mold of the pouring riser system after remelting and filtering. When using wax-based mold materials, the mold materials obtained after demolding can be recycled and used to make new investment molds. However, when recycled, the performance of the mold material will deteriorate, brittleness increases, ash content increases, fluidity decreases, shrinkage rate increases, and the color changes from white to brown. These are mainly related to the deterioration of stearic acid in the mold material. Therefore, in order to restore the original performance of the old mold material as much as possible, it is necessary to remove the soap salt from the old mold material. Commonly used methods are hydrochloric acid (sulfuric acid) treatment, activated clay treatment and electrolytic recovery.
